Cider houses are usually caserios - or country houses- mostly located in Gipuzkoa, which have facilities for the preparation and bottling of cider, and a space for the “kupelas” (barrels) and long tables where patrons can taste the specialities (cod omelette, fried cod with green peppers, and barbecued steak).
The season begins in January and finishes mid-April. During these months, it has become a tradition for the Basque people to come to these cider temples to practice the “txotx” ritual, which is extremely beautiful and peculiar: the owner of the cider house chooses a kupela (barrel) and he yells out “txotx”, thus inviting all those attending to taste the cider. Consumption of cider is unlimited.
Recently added to the ukcider wiki Events page , exciting news that the first International Craft Cider Festival organised by the WPCS has now been booked to take place on the dates of 4th - 6th July 2008 at Abergavenny Castle, South Wales. Here’s where I think the venue will be:
A crucial date for the diary for all cider enthusiasts and producers from all over Wales, England, Spain, France and Canada etc.
See you there next summer for the first ever, and at all subsequent International cider festivals as this event grows and grows.
UPDATE:
The First International Cider Festival organised by the Welsh Perry and Cider Society has been cancelled this this year but they hope to put it on in 2009 now.
Attempt to collate information about the most amazing cider tasting opportunity in the westcountry. Pubs around Bristol take turns to host a bloke and his entourage of 18 or more ciders. £2 a pint. Can you try them all?
Now there’s also a shorter list of Apple Day events which include cider in some form, and which local event organisers can easily add to just by editing the wiki as normal. It’s not late to think about putting on a small apple day event even now. If you have a common orchard nearby you could just invite the neighbourhood round to admire the fallen fruit, learn a bit about apple varieties and then go for a meal afterwards with some cider or perry. Or make it a childrens party day with apple juice and a drop of real cider for the grown ups.
Myself, I’ll be making my way to Walthamstow Apple Day on October 13th and I do hope you manage to find an event near enough to wherever you live as well and support it on the day. If you do know of any events in October loosely connected with apple day and incorporating cider in some form then please add them to the Apple Day page.
