Artisan Cider

What is Artisan Cider?
The term Artisan Cider is used by some to conjure up images of a pre-industrial age, when cider was made only by peasant farmers. The idea is to separate small scale hand crafted ciders from the medium and large scale product.
An artisan was a skilled manual worker who made items that may have been either functional or strictly decorative, such as furniture, clothing, jewellery, household items, and tools.
But the term can also be used as an adjective to refer to the craft of hand making food products, such as bread, beverages including beer wine and cider, and cheeses.
Artisan cider makers believe they have breathed life into what was a disappearing craft. Some are orchardists, but many are newcomers, refugees who have given up urban jobs to get back to nature. Others live a double life.
A good artisan cider should ooze provenance and character, made by farmhouse and artisan cider producers.
