Burnham on Crouch

Travel down Burnham on Crouch High St. Turn left at the Clock Tower (Providence) & we are halfway down on the right.

• Bricklayers 27 Bergholt Road, Colchester CO4 5AA (01206 852008). Crone's on handpump. Also Aspalls on draught. The pub is a couple of minutes walk from Colchester North railway station.

• Odd One Out 28 Mersea Road, Colchester CO2 7ET (01206 578140). 3 real ciders: Crones User Friendly, Thatchers 'Farmhouse Cider 6%', and guest (eg Wilkins, Hecks, Biddenden).

• Hospital Arms opposite Colchester General in the Town Center. Suffolk Aspall Cyder on tap

• The British Grenadier 67 Military Road, Colchester, Essex, CO1 2AP (01206 500933). Aspalls on draught. Just under 10 minutes walk from Colchester Town Station.

Epping

• "Forest Gate" 111 Bell Common (Theydon Road) , Epping CM16 4DZ (01999 572312). Bulmers Traditional on handpump.

Herongate Tye

• "Old Dog" Billericay Road, Herongate Tye (01277 810337). Thatchers Medium from the polypin 'out back'.

Mill Green (near Ingatestone)

• "Viper" Mill Green Road, CM4 0PT (01277 352010). Wilkins. In the middle of nowhere - phone for directions and beware deer crashing out of the forest in front of you.

Rochford

• Golden Lion 35 North Street, Rochford, Essex, SS4 1AB

Saffron Walden

• The Temeraire - in the main street through Saffron Walden. Has Weston's Old Rosie and Vintage (7.3% abv). Gets a but crowded with young people at certain times, and gets a bit noisy as a result, but OK otherwise. Small car park with an outside patio-type drinking area. Paul Gunningham

• The Duke of York - At the top of the high street, newly refurbished non-smoking, yet traditional pub, Small car park and beer garden, can get very crowded during peak periods, friendly staff and owners. Has Addlestones cider on tapLiz Adams

Southend-on-Sea

• Cork and Cheese Lower Ground Floor, Victoria Plaza, Southend-on-Sea, SS2 5BG. On bottom floor of shopping centre. Cheddar Valley cider.

• The Last Post Weston Road, Southend-on-Sea, SS1 1AS. Wetherspoons pub opposite main entrance to Southend Central railway station. Westons Old Rosie.
