  • The Old Pound Inn

Village pub reputed to sell real cider, a claim supported by their website, but no informants were sure which cider is stocked. On Bridgewater - Langport bus route - timetable.

Ashcott

Addlestones on hand pump. Pleasant pub with good food. Google map

  • The Railway Station Road, Ashcott (1.5 miles outside the village) Location. Local pub at the site of the old railway station. Sells Wilkins cider. Open evenings and some lunchtimes. On the Sustrans cycle path from Glastonbury, but I'd recommend the road unless you have an off-road bike as the path is in poor condition.

Bath

13+ pubs listed as selling real cider in Bath. I am working my way through them and reporting as I go - a tough job but someones gotta do it.(2008)

  • The Tuckers Grave Inn

If anyone is visiting the Bath area, my favourite local is the Tuckers Grave Inn, on the A366 between the villages of Norton St. Philip and Faulkland. A quiet little place with a lovely drop of Cheddar Valley cider, and a very small electricity bill. (My theory is that the smaller the bill, the better the pub!)

  • The Pig & Fiddle in Bath sells Bulmers Traditional.Big shed like pub, bit like an old Firkin. sanded floors and sports memorabilia on the walls.Good burgers. No kids.
  • The Victoria, a local pub in Oldfield Park, near South Avenue sells Thatchers.
  • The Trinity,James St West BA1 2DA a good little pub by Wetherspoons sells Old Rosie (out of box).
  • The Salamander 2,John St. BA1 2JL also sells real cider
  • The Bell. Walcot St. BA1 5BW The rough side of town and no draught cider but does Stowford Press and Weston's Organic in bottles. 7 real ales plus a pleasant vegetarian sausage roll. Liable to get full of 'young people'.
  • The Volunteer Rifleman's Arms 3, New Bond St and Ye Olde Farmhouse sell Black Rat, a local cider that is unfortunately slightly sparkling.
  • The Raven, Queen St BA1 1HE. Free house family run and a Camra 'pub of the year' in 2006.Bit of a corridor downstairs and piped muzak, but there is more room and another bar upstairs. They promise to have a draught cider on all the time, normally one of the Weston's range,'Old Rosie' or 'Scrumpy' Bottles of Weston's Organic also available. When we went they had New Forest 'Snake Catcher' on draught! Wonderful!.(£2.65 a pint, but you don't need very many....) Also do excellent pies from 'Pieminister' of Bristol plus about 5 real ales.Lovely pub
  • Porters and a few other pubs sell bottles of Weston's Organic cider.
  • Wetherspoons sells Old Rosie and a few other varieties out of the box, although service here is a nightmare.

90175578_9f73c1c3e0_t.jpg Larger Image
Faintly unbelievable pub a stone's throw from the station - we walked past it several times before finding it. Just like someone (very scruffy) front room, this is a true cider house with peeling decor and a wide range of cider. Landlord is not shy in telling you what he thinks of each cider (complimentary or not). Definitely an experience!

I had a weird experience here last year, I ordered 2 pints of cider, can't remember whose cider I asked for, but they were different (say one Thatchers and one Wilkins). The surprise was, they were both served from the same pump! I asked the landlord what was going on, and he told me THEY MIX IT! Honest, that's what he said.

Open all day 7 days a week.

Castle Cary

Wide range of bottled ciders including Sheppys, Thatchers, West Monkton, and containers of draught Rich's Cider.

Faulkland

  • Tuckers Grave Inn, on A366 1 mile east of Faulkland village. BA3 5KF

Sells Thatcher's Cheddar Valley Farmhouse Cider in such quantity that each pints tastes as fresh as if the barrel has just been broached. No food as such.

A stunningly unspoilt pub which successfully retains the feel of a country local as many would have been fifty or a hundred years ago. No bar, with barrels piled in the snug. Friendly staff and welcoming locals (except Tuesdays, when the "Thatchers Synchronised Drinking Team" practice).

Rumoured to be haunted, but no sign of the ghost yet.

Capt. Roger Rabbit, who famously sailed his square rigger "Wave Dancer" up the Blind Yeo after a few pints, is a regular here. Sadly, he is now beached on the top of Glastonbury Tor, and praying for a Tsunami to get him going again. Another famous customer who is in more than he's out (of various projects) is Sid the artist and painter. He and partner Coleen are off to Italy soon, where Sid has won the contract to give the ceiling in the Vatican's Cistine Chapel a coat of magnolia gloss. Coleen will operate the paint roller, and Sid will stand on the bottom rung of the ladder smoking roll-ups, telling rude jokes and swearing. On most nights of the year we are treated with a visit by a Thrush which nests locally, and a Pig has also made a few appearances. Motor cyclists welcome, especially if the machines they ride are older than the riders! A lovely pub run by Ivan & Glenda Swift, who recently introduced a new pub game to keep the locals amused. It's called "Find Ivan". Phone Glenda for the rules. 01373 834 230

  • Faulkland Inn. in the village itself.(BA3 5UH) Does Cheddar Valley and good home cooked food. new owners Mike & Jane Baker have revamped the place. 01373 834 312. mike@faulklandinn.co.uk website

  • The Angel just off the market place in the town centre. Very old building largely 17th century, unspoilt but pretty run down and could be fantastic if carefully restored. Rich's Dry on handpump. Menu board fixed to ceiling has things like 'breakfast', 'roll' etc.
  • The Lamb 1 Christchurch Street East, Frome, Somerset. BA11 1QA. Tel. 01373 472042

Just reopened (Jan 2008) after a takeover and total re-fit by local lads, 'Blindman's Brewery'and sell their full range of ales. Still sorting themselves out as regards food and atmosphere - a bit bare and minimalist inside. Rich's medium on hand pump. They told me that they were 'selling loads' and will always have a real cider of some description.

  • The Lamb & Fountain Castle St. Run by 'mother' who has been there since it was built c 1690. Untouched since the 1950's. Fantastic pub has to be seen to be believed. Like Tuckers Grave without the tourists.Rich's from barrel behind the bar. Maybe a packet of crisps on a good day.

Glastonbury

Beware of the George & Pilgrim's claim to sell 'local cider' - it is Blackthorn, which is made locally!

  • The Rifleman, Chilkwell St. Location.

  • The Prince of Wales Ham Hill

Isolated hilltop pub in the middle of Ham Hill Country Park. Stone floor, dogs and walkers welcome. Separate restaurant area, which previously was a chapel for the quarrymen. Sells Berrow Hill cider and a range of local real ales. Cellar has a 150+ foot deep roman well in the cellar, but you wont be able to see that (or the three other wells)as the landlord probably doesn't know its there. Good place to rest after exploring the extensive walks around the hill - the biggest British Iron Age hill camp. Google Map Archealogical excavations in the lean-to sheds at the back discovered bones of young infants, presumably dating back to the days when the outbuildings doubled as the local poorhouse for unmarried mothers. Was the drinking haunt of "Foister", a murderer/footpad/highwayman who preyed on travellers on the London-Exeter road and is said to be the last man gibbeted alive in England. A 40 pint barrel is only £28 if you bring your own, or + £15 deposit on one of theirs.Be sure to have a taste before you buy, although stocks are vast, turnover is slow with all that that might entail.
