Cider Pub Guide to Tyne and Wear
From Ukcider
For future contributors :
I am really a beer lover, but since cider is so relatively rare in these parts, I try to encourage the management by having at least 1 or 2 pints when I am lucky enough to come across them.
This initial list is just a few of the pubs I get into during my social wanderings that happen to provide cider. I've tried to indicate something of their character just in case my taste does not match yours - but at the very least, if you are visiting the area you should not be disappointed by the quality of beer/cider available.

Newcastle Upon Tyne
Town Centre
The Bodega
125 Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE1 4AG
One of the few cider outlets in the town centre, and very handy for St James' Park too. Pub in a former music hall with large stained glass domed skylights, among other interesting architectural features. Has Weston's Old Rosie on draught. Well-run with friendly staff and atmosphere, with a good mix of age groups during my visits. The GBG 2006 listed pub also has a good range of real ales, many of them from local brewers. Recommended.

The Union Rooms
48 Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE1 1JF
Wetherspoons in a large and interesting old building with high ceilings and many rooms on two levels. Has bottled Westons ciders among others. Close to the Central Station and town centre. A bit tatty on my visits, and understaffed at peak times, but OK if your train is delayed, and a lot cheaper than the station bars. The usual Wetherspoons food and range of real ales (including many local ones).

The Newcastle Arms
57 St Andrews Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE1 5SE
CAMERA Pub of the Year. Run by enthusiastic staff. Had a couple of ciders on when I was there and happy to pull a sampler - always a good sign. Also (obviously) good range of beers and its position close to Newcastle's Chinatown can be useful.
Others
The Cumberland Arms
Ouseburn, Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE6 1LD
This is a bit of a 'spit and sawdust' sort of a place - not terribly smart and certainly not a modern 'plastic' pub. But it does seem to have a very enthusiastic and committed management. Great atmosphere, friendly patrons, with live music in one room plus a couple of other rooms available for those that like it a little quieter. Worth taking a look at their website (below).
Thatchers Cheddar Valley and two other ciders available when I called in November 2005 - three draught ciders in one pub is a bit of a record in this locality !

The Cluny
36 Lime Street, Ouseburn, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 2PQ
Apparently the official name is The Head of Steam - but everyone locally knows it as The Cluny. Big for live music, but thats in a separate room from the main bar and the beers are really why I go. Always has at least one real cider on draught.

The Job Bulman
St Nicholas Avenue, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE3 1AA
A Wetherspoons pub, recently opened - a non-smoking, no piped-music pub.
Always seems to have two ciders available on draught - at the moment (November 2005) its an organic cider plus Old Rosie
North Shields
Tap And Spile
184 Tynemouth Road, North Shields, NE30 1EG, 0191 2573228
Usually quiet on the Sunday evening I get in here but seems a nice little pub on the North Shields 'real ale circuit'. Always has lots of real ale on draught (anything upto 8 I think) and includes two draught ciders.
