The Hecks family have been making traditional Somerset farmhouse cider in Street for six generations, since 1840. They began to make and supply cider to the general public in 1896. Their cider is made by blending juice from apples all grown locally in the farms orchards. The cider is fermented in wooden barrels and sold draught from the wood. Hecks' Farmhouse Cider is one of the few cider farms to still to use the old traditional methods of cider making.
As well as their own ciders, their Cider Farm Shop also sells Burrow Hill Somerset Royal Cider Brandy, a range of cider mugs and jars; also cider vinegar, pickles, chutneys and mustards, jams, marmalades and honey, as well as a range of locally packed and produced Cheddar cheese, fruit and vegetables. It is open 9.00am - 5.30pm Monday - Saturday and 10.00am - 12.30pm on a Sunday during Summer, 9.00am - 5.00pm Monday - Saturday and 10.00am - 12.30pm on Sunday during Winter. Spring and Summer Bank Holidays: 10.00am - 2.00pm.
The farm is located just off the A39 Glastonbury-Bridgwater road in the village of Street. Unusually, it is in the town rather than out in the wilds. From the High Street in Street town centre, turn up Vestry Road, cross over the first crossroads into Merryman Road, then over the next into Oriel Road (caution - give way at all crossings). Heck's is in a street called Middle Leigh on the corner where it intersects Oriel Road (which then becomes Ivythorn Road). Follow the brown 'Cider Farm' signs, or print off the map on the Hecks' Farmhouse Cider website.
Hecks' Farmhouse Ciders, Perrys and Apple Juices are award winning. They were CAMRA National Champion Cider and Perry Competition 2006 "National Gold" Winners.
Hecks' produce Sweet, Medium or Dry farmhouse ciders. All are fermented in oak barrels and sold draught from the wood. They also produce and sell Single Variety Ciders and their own Somerset-made Perry (both are subject to availability); as well as Torside Apple Juice a non-alcoholic apple juice, made from their own Dessert Apples grown in the Hecks orchards overlooked by Glastonbury Tor.
