NearCide is our initiative to promote locally produced ciders and perries. This has numerous benefits including the reduction of cider miles, preservation of local tradition, and the encouragement of local small businesses.

The further away cider is imported from, the higher the cost to the environment in burning fossil fuels for transportation.

Comparison with beer
We should emphasise the low-impact of cider production compared to beer. The fermentation of fruit juice requires no boiling, sparging, heating, chilling, etc. etc. whereas brewing beer consumes huge amounts of energy and water.
Environmental benefit of orchards
There's the carbon benefit from the trees in an orchard which absorb free carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Also the beneficial habitat for native wildlife.
