Pear Cider - A Marketing construct
The term 'Pear Cider' was adopted fairly recently by UK cider manufacturers aiming at the 'over ice' and youth alcopops markets but was then surprising accepted by the National Association of Cider Makers (NACM) as an acceptable alternative to perry.
Pear Cider versus Perry
If the traditional name Perry is to survive, and it has to be addmitted not many people in the population at large have heard of perry, then it can only be by distinguishing itself entirely from pear cider as craft perry. With one or two small to medium producers tempted to jump on the pear cider bandwagon there's a danger this dividing line will become blurred.
