About

Whislt living in Shropshire in 1976, Ralph decided to follow in his Grandfather's footsteps and began making cider. However, a move to Anglesey in 1978 posed problems due to the lack of apples on Anglesey and in north Wales as a whole. It was at this time that he became a farm manager for Bertram Bulmer, of Bulmer's cider.

The half term holidays from school in October became Ralph's annual pilgrimage to Radnorshire as his cousin had an orchard of white Norman apple trees. The apples were loaded onto a trailer and transported to a farm just outside Hereford for milling and pressing. The precious juice was then poured into a 56 gallon barrel and put back into the landrover for the journey back to Anglesey!

In 1982, Bertram Bulmer, who encouraged Ralph to continue in cider production, decided to take a bottle back to the laboratories in Hereford for analysis. It was declared the best tasting cider that year - clear, bright with an alcohol content of 8%.

A move to his present home of Old Badland in 1986 meant Ralph could restore a small orchard of trees on farm and begin producing cider on a larger scale. A horse driven stone mill, which was bought from Abergavenny, was installed and the rest is history!

All of Ralph's juices are pressed through a cloth or hair, with either one of their Victorian oak beam screw presses or smith vintage hydraulic presses. The Cider & Perry then rely on their natural yeasts & tannins to ferment.
