Voted 'Camra cider pub of the year 2009' http://www.camra.org.uk/page.aspx?o=308667
A smart, one-bar harbourside pub near to S.S. Great Britain, The Orchard Inn is noted for its weekday lunches. Impressive cider list: Thatchers traditional, Black Rat, Orchards, Rich's, Janet's Jungle Juice, Burrow Hill, Crossmans, Hecks KB, Perry's, Westons Old Rosie & Sheppy's plus Hecks Perry in Feb 09. Stuart, of Cider Sunday fame, who took over this pub in November, regularly puts on different and new ciders and knows his stuff! Open All day from 12 noon. Happy hour 5-7 (20p off pints). Food 12-3. Can be reached from the city centre by the harbour ferry during the day - get off at the 'SS Great Britain' landing stage, walk down the street & take the first alley on the right. Timetable.
The Orchard stocks up to 15 ciders in the cellar, a great choice for cider drinkers with potentially 23 ciders to sample. Some rarities have been seen such as the excellent Ashill and regular appearances from Burrow Hill, Hecks, Wilkins, Crossmans and West Croft.
All-day opening, good rolls and pies and live music.
- Review 1: The Orchard really is *the* place to go if you want a proper pint of cider in Bristol, and without having to pay town centre lager prices!! Stuart who has been running this pub for nearly a year now, really knows his stuff, and regularly seeks out new and different ciders and perrys. There were ~22 different ciders and perrys available last count (bottle, pump and polypin/barrel), and usually 8+ 'real' ciders available from 'out the back'- see the board for latest additions. Recent excellent ciders have included; Wilkins dry, Severn cider perry dry, Ross-on-wye farmhouse and many more. It's location is pretty much in the centre of Spike Island and draws a mix of workers from the local docks and industrial units, to art types from the Spike Island studios, not to mention Aardman staff en masse on Fridays after work! The pub itself is unremarkable with single room and small front terrace (although many cross the road to sit in the afternoon sun!), it is located a couple of mins walk from the SS Great Britain, the other side of the derelict warehouses. The pork pies and scotch eggs are worth the trip alone, but if you want something more substantial, there is daily specials from the bar menu available as well as rolls. Proudly displays CAMRA Regional cider pub of the year certificates behind the bar, and deservedly so! Certainly my choice cider pub in the region, highly recommended!
