Upton Cider Company is a real cider producer based in Didcot, Oxfordshire.

About

The present 10 acre cider apple orchard was originally planted by Stan Lynch in 1970 and 1971 to provide cider apples to the Taunton Cider Company. The apples were sent down to Somerset each autumn to make Dry Blackthorn. In addition, a further 6 acres of orchard made up of eating and cooking apples, together with cob nuts was also planted.

In 1983, Stan started making his own cider on the Farm and the Upton Cider Company was formed. Now all of the cider apples go into their own production.

He stopped the spraying of the trees and the applications of outside fertilizers in 1989, and now all cider is organic and made in accordance with Soil Association standards.

Stan sadly died in 2008, aged 86.

Since 1999, the Upton Cider Company has been run by Val Fitchett, assisted by her husband Robert. Val served an apprenticeship with Stan in 1998, before taking over the business the following year.

All ciders are still, clear and strong and made using hand-sorted organic apples. The ciders have an abv of around 7.0%, dependent on cider type, and are sold in a range of sweet, medium and dry. Naturally, you nare able to taste the cider before you buy. It is sold from their shop in two pint (1.1 litre) and 4 pint (2.2. litre) containers at £6.80 for a 4 Pint bottle and £3.90 for a 2 Pint bottle, with discounts available for party size orders.

Shop in the orchard open from May to December: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5pm.
