re Gloucestershire, pub guides etc

Andy, just to let you know, I've responded to your comments regarding britishpubguide.com. I completely understand your suspicions, but in this case they are unfounded. If you email me on duncan.shine@britishpubguide.com, I'll let you have my contact details so we can discuss this further. If after that you still don't want my links on ukcider, I'll remove them myself. Cheers, Duncan. Duncshine 17:02, 13 March 2006 (GMT)

"Copied" text from Wikipedia

Considering I wrote the Brothers Cider Wikipedia entry im sure its fine for me to paste it here too? --Mercifull 12:22, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Yes it was ok to paste your article in, I just unlinked some of the wikipedia house style of linking words like "england" to pages which have nothing do do with cider. --Andy 12:42, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Oh ok, thats alright then :) --Mercifull 13:10, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Problem with Gloucestershire page

Hi Andy - am trying to add a new entry to the Gloucestershire page and am just getting an empty page in response every time I save. Any clues? cheers --Richard Fairhurst 20:51, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

(Text below:)

Northleach

  • Red Lion, Market Place, Northleach (Tel: 01451 860251)

Westons Organic in bottles (plus draught Stowford Press). Most down-to-earh of Northleach's pubs. Pub grub is decent enough but service was incredibly slow on our visit.

Industrial cider

Afternoon Andy - I note that the entry for Saxon on Industrial cider has been sanitised, like the Aston Manor was a while back. In both cases I suspect it's someone connected to the relevant companies. Do you think it might be worth locking the page? --Richard Fairhurst 15:19, 29 September 2006 (BST)

Hi Richard. Feel free to revert the page if you prefer the previous version. Should it turn into a ping pong match then argue it out on the discussion page. I think page locking would have to be a last resort, and a temporary one. --Andy 15:26, 29 September 2006 (BST)

I'd have to say, that whilst I may agree with the comments that were removed, I much prefer entries to be more 'fact' based than peoples opinions. Everyones opinions are likely to be different, and the wiki isn't a discussion forum, it's there to provide unbiased information. The entry as it now stands says about as much as is neccessary really, La Cantina is listed under Industrial Ciders, and the (alleged) use of concentrate is mentioned. Perhaps a listing of the 'ciders' would be useful, though again I'd not want to see too much personal opinion on them. Mark

Oops... Perhaps I've put my foot in it then, as the unsanitised version was I thought (allegedly) based on fact gathered from talking to folks who run some CAMRA cider bars, when queried about why they were stocking Saxon ciders exclusively. In my own experience, the reply has always been based as much on cost as on lack of knowledge about other products. I am concerned that we could be heading into a dichotomy here, between the wiki asking folks to report back on what they found and their experiences of visiting cider pubs, compared with trying to ensure that everything is unbiased and unopinionated. An example is the very sanitised, antiseptic entry for Burtle, Somerset in Cider_Pub_Guide_to_Somerset. We intend to visit Burtle soon and will report back honestly. --Ray 18:35, 29 September 2006 (BST)

An interesting discussion and since it's taking place on my user talk page here's my opinion :-) I'd like to think it possible for different people to add in their own personal accounts, which add a lot of value and colour to the entries, without evolving into a discussion forum on the guide pages. The mediawiki software provides for a clear distinction between content and conversation through these discussion pages. I'm not really a great believer in the concept of "neutral point of view" which tends to boil down to a lowest denominator minimalist statement or else echo the prevailing cultural biases. So I'll probably try to reinstate some of the lost acount of the visit to Burtle. As for Saxon well I've never even seen it but the refernce to CAMRA beer and cider festivals is probably of interest.--Andy 20:43, 29 September 2006 (BST)
